Obedience is the foundation of love
In Matthew 22:36-38, a lawyer asked Jesus, “‘Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?’ Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment.”
“Above all commandments! You can take everything in this book,” said Miles, lifting the Bible, “the number one thing is that you love God.”
Practically, that just means that we should do what God says. “Stop right there!”
When counseling people of all ages and walks of life, Pastor Miles’ advice is always the same: obey God. That’s because we’re constantly in process of learning to obey God better.
Obeying God is the foundation of loving well, not only in our relationship with God, but in all of our relationships, “whether you’re dating, marriage, your best friend, your grandmother, whoever it is – the foundation has to be: obeying God.”
CHALLENGE: Identify way in which you regularly disobey God. Ask Him for forgiveness, and decide to bring that area of your life into submission to God so that you can love God and others better.
