Church: It’s full of hypocrites, just like it’s supposed to be

“Raise your hand if you have just one sin in your life that you know, man, I need to get rid of that” said Miles. “Sinners, sinners sinners!” he mumbled sarcastically, as everyone around the room raised a hand.

The point is that churches are full of people who are sinners and flawed. But that’s true of every other place we go! Everybody we know and interact with is messed up, dealing with drama, and trying to cover up all the junk in their lives. Most people, to some extent, are hypocrites.

Generally speaking, people who don’t go to church think that church is full of hypocrites. A study suggests that up to 72% think this way. “I talk to people who say, ‘I don’t go to church because there’s so many hypocrites in church!'” said Miles.

Whether or not that’s true – isn’t church the perfect place for hypocrites to be? Jesus said in Mark 2:17, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.” Church, faith, and Jesus Christ himself are all for sinners – hypocrites like us.
